It was also our first opportunity this year to take Meyer out in the snow to play. He was not a fan. Not a single smile. And if the snow touched his boots or his hands, he began to scream "no!!" while pointing at it angrily. Good times.

This is my first VoxBox from Influenster to review. I was really surprised to see so many full size goodies inside, plus coupons for several of the products. Some of the products are new house favorites, while others I'm likely to skip over in the future. Here's some details on what I received:

Beanitos Chips
These are white bean based chips. Gluten free, non-GMO, high protein and high fiber, all natural, preservative free. Oh and high in flavor! The Nacho Cheese chips have a mild Doritos flavor, and a mild bean flavor. I also tried the Restaurant Style White Bean chips with Sea Salt. They were very good! The definitely didn't taste like beans! The whole family enjoyed these. We tend to buy more natural types of chips, and these have moved to the top of the list.

Covergirl Ultrasmooth Foundation
I received a full size tube of this product. The purpose of the product is to provide even tone and texture, smooth-looking skin, and great coverage for blemishes and "even fine facial hair." I personally didn't see the point in that for myself, but perhaps that is something that others struggle with and it's a desirable quality for a foundation. The product is packaged with a silicone applicator with instructions to apply the foundation in the direction of hair growth for best coverage. I tried out the applicator, but it honestly felt like a waste of time, so I ditched it. I did like this product. I don't normally care for the scent of many popular brands of foundation, but this one was actually pleasant. The make-up went on smoothly, provided good coverage, and never felt thick or heavy. This foundation actually includes an Olay serum which evidently aids in smooth coverage. I would actually buy this product, though I would never have tried it on my own.

L'OCCITANE Shea Butter Light Comforting Cream
I really enjoyed being able to test this product. It's so much more than your regular lotion. I had no idea what I was missing out on having never tried a cream with shea butter! It's thick and really left my face feeling soft and hydrated. This winter weather over the past few weeks has made for some irritated and dry skin, and thankfully this cream was the answer! Evidently L'OCCITANE is committed to a fair trade partnership with women who make shea butter in West Africa, which is even more of a reason to buy this product. It is a little more expensive than I would typically purchase ($5 for a tiny 8 ml container), but worth it if you only used it for skin that's been under harsh conditions.

Orgain Certified Organic Nutritional Shakes
My VoxBox contained a voucher for a free Orgain shake. I checked Orgain's website and found out that it was only available at a few different area health food stores. So I stopped by Mama Jean's and picked out a chocolate protein shake to try. I really wanted to like this product. But I did not. I love chocolate. But this just didn't taste like chocolate to me, possibly because it's a non-dairy, non-soy product. Perhaps protein shakes just aren't my thing. There's a great story behind this brand if you care to check it out here.

Montagne Jeunesse Face Masques
I haven't done a face mask in a LONG time! I was pretty excited about testing and reviewing this one until I realized that the one I received was a peel off mask. EEEk. Peel-off in this arid winter climate=skin ripping. Right? Surprisingly, no! I tried the Black Seaweed Peel Off masque, described as a detox and deep cleaning masque. It took a long, long time to dry, and it was very sticky, but peeled off very easily without pain. Score. And it did leave my skin feeling very clean and soft, and not dry in the least. I plan to check out the other available masks by Montagne Jeunesse.

Skinnygirl Tasty Nutrition Bars
Yum. Seriously good. And very reasonable priced. My VoxBox contained Skinnygirl's Dark Chocolate Pretzel bar which has 160 calories, 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber with no artificial sweeteners or flavors and lots of organic and natural ingredients. It didn't taste nutritious in the least. :-)

Listerine PocketPaks
I had no idea these were still a thing! The breath strips dissolve immediately and freshen your breath in an instant. I always enjoy these.

DenTek Comfort Clean Floss Picks and Fun Flossers
It's honestly never crossed my mind to purchase any of these flosser picks when I've seen them at the store. Our dentist typically gives us plenty of samples to last until our next check-up. But I can understand why people would pay the extra money for these instead of regular dental floss. They are simple to use, and you could easily tuck one of the small zip-close packs into your purse or briefcase for use while on the go. That's much more sanitary and a whole lot less embarrassing than trying to floss in public or, heaven forbid, hold onto that spinach bit for later. The only thing I didn't like about these is that you really can't get around the tooth as well as you can with regular dental floss.
This month, I received complimentary samples of Beanitos White Bean Chips for review from Influenster. Meyer and I tried them out this evening. I was really surprised by how good they were. We look for healthier snack options, especially now that we have a toddler. Other bean-based chips and crackers that we've tried are typically very bean-y tasting. Which is fine! We expect them to taste a little bit like their ingredients. But Beanitos Chips are surprisingly less beany. The nacho cheese flavor tasted alot like Doritos - same kind of crunch, but less mess, and a flavor that was slightly less intense. We also tried the Beanitos with sea salt. Not. Even. A. Little. Beany. Very tasty! They are very similar in taste to a white corn tortilla chip. Nice and light and flavorful. We will definitely look for these in the store. They really are #allthatinabagofchips . Thanks Influenster! Please enjoy this video of our first taste!

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

day and realized that the hymn "From the Depths of Woe" had been in my head
all morning. Do you ever do that? Suddenly realize that you've been humming, singing, or just rolling the words of a song through your mind?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">It's been several months since I've thought
about this song, though it is one my favorites. I love the words. It's by Martin
Luther - big shock that the Presbyterian in me loves it so much. Obviously it's
an old hymn, but in college we would sing it at RUF (Reformed University
Fellowship). And of course they changed the arrangement a little bit.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Last
summer, my brother sent me an email telling me that there was a song they were
singing at RUF at Auburn and he just absolutely loved it. He then sent me a youtubelink of someone playing a guitar and singing this same hymn, same arrangement that I knew from my RUF days. It made my day. My brother has been
going through a spiritually hungry phase - ravenous is more like it. He's
reading book after book after book, and can't stop talking about all of 'the
deeps' - I love it. I love that guy.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">So this song got me thinking of one
of my favorite verses from the Psalm 42 - "Deep calls to deep in the roar of
your waterfalls." I think that verse has multiple meanings. The first is
this: I think that 'soul depth' is naturally, magnetically attracted to similar
'soul depth' in others. The Spirit of God within us communes with the Spirit in
others - I think of the way that my heart burned the night that I met
Joshua - and it was the same for Him. "The Spirit Himself bears witness
with our spirit that we are children of God" (Romans 8:16). We are one in
the Spirit, and there's a sighing, a breathing out of 'Yes I know you!' And I
think the "iron sharpens iron" verse ties into that too - we can't
help but be drawn to people who inspire and challenge us to listen, to learn,
to long for more.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">When we've received the Holy Spirit,
we are instantly deepened to a certain degree - there's a conversation, a
communion that begins. And I think that, as vessels of that Spirit, we can't
help but yearn for more and more of Him - for deeper communion and
understanding. And that's how God created us - like the churning at the bottom
of that waterfall - because of the momentum behind the water, we're plunged
deeper and deeper. He calls us into that.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">I think this hymn tells a truth
about that 'depth-calling' too. He allows us to feel the 'depths of woe'
because, from there, we cry out for more of Him - his healing, his nearness, to
see Him! And from that bottom of that valley of 'secret sins and misdeeds dark'
- we realize and the depths of our own depravity, and thus our deeper need for
Him. And we see more and more of the secrets of Who He is.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">So, I'm just thinking about how
undeserving I am to know Him, but how thankful I am that He wants me to know
Him more. And though I'm not in the "depths of woe" at this moment, I can know that when I am, there is a deeper purpose. Even if it means pain and discomfort and sorrow for a time.

What do you love about a rainy Saturday?Suzy Roberts4http://www.blogger.com/profile/14324229938479920807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-388707219328081812.post-20788052598199354522011-09-14T22:38:00.003-05:002011-09-14T22:39:33.987-05:00Wait For It...I broke two fingernails before 9 a.m. this morning. I then decided a third cup of coffee before 10 was absolutely permissible.

I dropped a medium-size stack of documents that I was working on, and they cascaded across the floor underneath my desk. They were no longer in the order that I needed to handle them.

The phone began to ring, I took a too-quick sip of coffee as I said 'hello' and spilled a few drops on my dry-clean only slacks. Grabbed my purse, pulled out a Tide-To-Go pen and got to work on that pants. Whew. Nice save.

I then got back to work picking up my mess of papers, and... I knocked over my coffee mug. Coffee quickly moved across the top of my entire desk and spilled across the front. I raced, in heels, to the nearest restroom, grabbed a handful of papertowels (wet and dry) and wiped up the spill before it could reach any electronics. I spent the next fifteen minutes cleaning coffee up from the carpet.

In the midst of the clean-up, I remembered something that I needed to do as soon as I arrived at the office this morning. I was now two hours late on that task...

I got carried away working on a project, lost track of time, and somehow did not eat lunch until two p.m. Yeah, by then I was pretty hungry.

It rained so heavily this afternoon, that water was coming in some of the windows in our FOURTH FLOOR clinic. With the other practice manager out of the office today, I had the task of hunting down our assigned maintenance tech for some assistance. He was out of the office today. Many phone calls and messages later, I made contact with someone who could contact someone who could probably help. Nice.

An interesting, not so spectacular (but not terrible) kind of day.

Oh, and by the time I left work, the afternoon deluge had brought with it, much cooler temperatures. Like 30 degrees cooler. So I shivered as I walked through the windy parking lot from my building to my car. And I decided it was necessary to stop at the house to pick up a jacket before heading to church tonight.

I decided to check the mailbox before running inside. (Is it sad that when it comes to the 'privilege' of checking the mail, I'm basically an 8 year old?) I honestly figured that Joshua would have checked the mail at lunchtime, but...

Ooooh!!! A package!! Not just a package... a PRIORITY MAIL package... with a Vidalia return address and the name of someone we love and miss!

SO EXCITING!!!
So fun! Our new friends, Robb and Pam Chandler, have become very good friends with these two sweet young women:

Sisters Ruby and Daisy are from Vietnam. Using the Bible in a small study on Sunday mornings, Robb is teaching these ladies English. He and Pam minister to these women in a way that just amazes me.

After several people had the opportunity to taste the spring rolls these ladies brought to a July 4th party, Pam decided it would be fun to have a get-together at the church where Ruby and Daisy could demonstrate how to make sushi and spring rolls. I was not going to miss that! (Unfortunately, Joshua wasn't feeling well that morning, so he was unable to attend). There was a great group of folks in the church kitchen that morning, each of us eager to test our culinary skills... and even more excited to taste the end results! We had a lot of fun, and everything was delicious! And, I'm telling you, Ruby and Daisy make the absolute BEST tasting spring rolls I've ever had.

Robb and Pam sent me home with some of the leftover ingredients, so I treated Joshua to homemade California rolls for dinner and that made him happy. I also attempted the spring rolls. This didn't go as well as the sushi... :-)

Rolling them up was easy. However... I have no idea how to fry anything. So... they looked... well, disgusting. I also melted a nylon spatula in the process, and had to open the garage, some windows, and every door in the house to air out the smell of the crispity-crunchity unidentifiable charred remains of what should have been something delicious. Thankfully, I only attempted to fry four of the twenty or so that I had rolled. The rest are now in the freezer, waiting for someone to come over and teach me how to deep fry something.

I refuse to embarass myself (any further...ahem) by pretending to fully remember the How-To's well enough now for this to be any kind of Instructional post.... so I'll just leave you with some pictures of the day and of some of our sweet new friends!
Since our first visit to Springfield, we have noticed many differences. The types of trees and flowers commonly seen? Different. The grass is different too. The roads are DEFINITELY smoother than the Jackson area - (and even though the heat has been incredible here lately, I haven't seen any buckled parking lots - but I bet the roads are made of different materials). Most people here don't say words like Y'all. 'Accent' is not pronounced 'Ack-sent.' People think the day is too hot when the thermometer hits 80. Sweet tea is NOT served at every restaurant. And the Fair takes place in the summer! If the Mississippi State Fair took place any earlier than October, I'm fairly certain that people would die.

Some new friends gave us free Fair admission tickets, so last Friday night, we decided we'd check out the Ozark Empire Fair.

The truth is that neither one of us has been to The Fair in years and years, and without the free tickets (Thank you, Judy Foley!) we probably would not have bothered. Especially since we assumed that since it was just a regional fair (not the State Fair) that it was going to be somewhat rinky-dink. We were totally wrong! We were so very surprised to see the size of the fair and the size of the crowd. It was pretty big for being just a regional fair.

We checked out the midway, enjoyed some really bad karaoke (score!), and stumbled across something we had heard rumors of in the past few weeks:

The World Famous Pineapple Whip.

Evidently this is THE favorite fair treat of Springfield locals. Truthfully, I had no idea what to expect, but it was another pleasant surprise! It's a pineapple-flavored frozen/ice-creamy-ish treat. And it was delicious! Joshua decided to go against the flow and get a Grape whip instead - and it was also very good!

Then...while we were walking along, taking in the sights and sounds of the midway, enjoying some pineapply goodness, we came across this sweet-treat reminder of home:

It was a good night.

Tears are just plain silly when you’re driving by places like... Kroger in Pearl.

Yeah, I did that. I can promise you I didn't cry because I knew i'd miss their fabulous selection of fresh veggies. Ahem.

Also not fun to say goodbye to your house. Especially when it’s a pink house. With parquet flooring. And dark pink azaleas. And a perfectly shaped magnolia. Oh, I love the smell of magnolia blooms.

And this sweetheart will be staying with Joshua's parents until we sell the house and can move somewhere with a backyard.

Sweet Lucy, how we miss you!

BUT – we were excited about the move to Springfield and National Heights. We have been so blessed by this new church family. They have taken such good care of us! From the welcome/housewarming party, to the Springfield Cardinals tickets, homegrown veggies, and the constant lunch and dinner invitations, we have been just blown away by the generosity of these people and the constant out-pouring of God’s love through them.

Oh, and we were even given the opportunity to rent a duplex owned by a church member. We did downsize a bit from our 3 bedroom home to a 2 bedroom duplex, but we’re so very thankful that this home was available for us here! And it’s so nice! We LOVE having a two car garage, a large open kitchen, huge master bath, and ENORMOUS walk-in closet. And our guest room has a large enough closet, that it is now known as The Sewing Room. LOVE!

Here is a pic of the new place:
– which is great for Joshua. It was incredibly convenient our very first Sunday here too. As we were getting ready for church that morning, a transformer blew on our street. Uh, bummer. No electricity = no hairdryer or curling iron for me. (On the bright side, I got to shower by candlelight… on a Sunday morning. J ) Also, we had no idea how to get the garage door to open without electricity. Thankfully, we had one vehicle in the driveway. So Joshua left the car for me to drive when I was ready, and he just walked to church.

Well, that’s all for now! More updates and stories coming soon.
Suzy Roberts4http://www.blogger.com/profile/14324229938479920807noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-388707219328081812.post-28375696290066610682011-07-30T11:19:00.001-05:002011-08-01T18:18:14.571-05:00We are... Blogging!
Yes, we are blogging! Can you believe that? I’ve rolled the idea around in my head for most of this year. I found a million and one reasons NOT to start up a blog, but I have finally decided to go ahead and take the plunge. Why now? Well, we moved to Missouri! And since moving to Missouri, I have learned that it is VERY HARD to keep up with everyone I love! Facebook, texting, and Skype can only take me so far! And honestly, some stories are worth passing along, but I start to feel like a broken record. Friends and family have asked for pictures of our new home, stories of our new town, info on our church, and just general updates on our new life in the Midwest. And on top of that, I'd like to be able to keep a 'journal' of this time in my life as well.

So here We Are! And We Are… blogging!
Suzy Roberts4http://www.blogger.com/profile/14324229938479920807noreply@blogger.com0
